The Ozark chinquapin (Castanea ozarkensis), sometimes called the Ozark chestnut, is a drought tolerant hardwood tree that reaches up to 65 feet tall and 2-3 feet in diameter. It inhabited the rocky upper slopes and ridge tops of the Ozark and Ouachita Mountains in Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Eastern Texas. (OCF) Most of the trees, unfortunately were killed from the chestnut blight that decimated the American chestnut. The Ozark Chinquapin Foundation has located rare surviving trees of the blight and has bred blight resistant trees from the survivors for seedlings with enriched resistance to the blight. We grow roughly five of these a year from Ozark Chinquapin Foundation seed mailed out to members. We have been proud members of the foundation since 2019. For each tree sold, we will donate 50% of the sale to the OCF. (These trees ideally should be planted in the native range of the OC and not in heavy clay soils. They prefer rocky, gravelly or sandy loam). Due to being rare, please take these considerations into account before purchasing trees.
